Comfortably Numb: The Case for Discomfort in Architecture
翻滚吧!城市舞台》是为燃冉艺术季“艺术巴扎单元”创作的空间装置,复原孩童以城市作为游乐场的身体记忆,跳跃、翻滚,邀请观众以身体的方式参与到艺术季和城市中。
“Rolling! Urban Stage" is a spatial installation designed for the "Art Bazaar Unit" of the Ran Art Season. It recaptures a child's bodily memory of the city as a playground, jumping and tumbling, inviting the audience to participate in the art season and the city in a bodily way.

The installation is supported by a metal frame shaped by the geometric lines in the space, and the seating surfaces are fully fabricated by hand. Compared to the mass industrialized, modular production and construction process, hand making is a very slow and intimate practice. Handcrafting allows us to maintain the possibility of engaging and collaborating with different groups of people in all aspects of the design and production process, connecting in a way that is more meaningful than merely production.
The final product was knitted by us and several volunteers in one day. Due to the nature of the knitting work, most of the volunteers were women, and during the knitting process we shared knitting techniques and told stories about our adventures in Shanghai, and this feminine wisdom and experience was woven into the texture of the installation.

“Rolling! Urban Stage" is flexible and adaptable, functioning as an outdoor public furniture, as well as a stage for performances, public events, and small-scale lectures. The four sections of urban furniture units can be used individually or in a geometrically related spatial combination to form an enclosed stage space. We hope that in the context of different urban spaces, it will inspire more interaction between people and the city, and release the energy and dynamics of the urban space itself. Dozens of activities such as plays, sharing sessions, folk music performances and workshops were held here during the Art Season.
